The Scotoma is a project inspired by the political economic writings of Dr. Walter Block, John Taylor Gatto, and Samuel Edward Konkin III. It is dedicated to examining and reporting on people who thrive in the blind spots of the State and society, and how their activities help us advance toward a society that relies more on individuals and less on the State.
Often, when people live their lives outside of government-sanctioned markets and institutions, they are surrounded by unwarranted stigma. At best, as in the case of homeschooling parents, they are met with ignorant criticism and social ostracism. At worst, in the case of drug dealers and other rogue entrepreneurs, they face lengthy prison sentences and financial ruin. In either case, these misunderstood individuals - economic scapegoats, as Dr. Block calls them - are not only harmless to us, but provide unseen benefits for which they receive no gratitude.
Peering through an explicitly libertarian lens, The Scotoma seeks to provide a thorough look at the blind spots and the people, industries, and innovations pertaining to them.
